Description
The Circular MED Approved multiblade Marine A60 Fire damper is designed for use on marine vessels to protect the integrity of fire-rated bulkheads and decks
Each Fire damper is controlled by an electrical failsafe spring return actuator combined with a thermoelectric tripping device (thermal fuse) and volt free contacts for remote status indication. They are very useful for use in engine room ventilation systems where large volumes of air are required in normal operations, however, in the case of a fire need to become a closed fire barrier to protect passengers and crew whilst help arrives or action is taken to bring a fire under control.
The benefit of adding 60 minutes of fire protection to an engine room or another area susceptible to fire, is that it could be sufficient time to evacuate a vessel, or alternatively wait until help can arrive. In the situation of fire being detected the louvres or fins of the damper will automatically close and create a fire break and offer a life saving additional time to evacuate.
The dampers are easy to install and maintain, they operate automatically and quite literally can save lives!
Fire dampers are fire protection products used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) ducts to prevent the spread of fire inside the ductwork through fire-resistance rated bulkheads and decks. When a rise in temperature occurs, the fire damper closes, usually activated by a thermal element which melts at temperatures higher than ambient but low enough to indicate the presence of a fire, allowing springs to close the damper blades. The fire dampers can also close following receipt of an electrical signal from a fire alarm system utilising detectors remote from the damper, indicating the sensing of heat or smoke in the building occupied spaces or in the HVAC duct system.
Marine A60 fire dampers are passive fire protection products used in the marine industry to prevent the spread of fire from inside the engine room or other fire-rated space through fire-resistance-rated walls and floors. Fire/smoke dampers are similar to fire dampers in fire-resistance rating, and also prevent the spread of smoke inside the vessel. When a rise in temperature occurs, the fire damper closes, usually activated by a thermal element which melts at temperatures higher than ambient but low enough to indicate the presence of a fire, allowing springs to close the damper blades. The A-60 Marine Fire Damper is suitable for both vertical and horizontal applications, with airflow in either direction

Operation and Maintenance
Testing
Two levels of testing exist
- Routine testing Monthly, or in accordance with a maintenance programme, release and reset damper (via a control system or ETR test switch). Check remote indication or visual check of mechanical pointer as appropriate
- Visual check at damper At commissioning and at least once a year, check damper operation by removing and re-applying power to the actuator. (via ETR test switch). Visually check blades for damper closed and open positions. Prove remote indication if applicable.
Routine Maintenance
Depending upon environmental conditions, each damper will merit its own cleaning regime. Particularly hostile areas may require monthly cleaning and lubrication.
‘Frequency of maintenance’ should be determined by collecting historical data from previous visits, and for this reason, commence maintenance programmes at very frequent intervals. Dampers in ‘Dry Filtered Air’ require very limited maintenance. Using Duck Oil (recommended lubricant, or similar equivalent), clean all exposed surfaces, using a cloth. Remove all traces of surface staining, as this will deteriorate further causing deeper material corrosion.
If the damper is stiff to operate, lubricate blade ends and open and close damper successively until the damper moves with ease. (This may necessitate the removal of the actuator and operating the blades manually by the drive shaft). Refit actuator, and retest. Clean off excessive lubricant
