Description
Gyro-Gale Pneumatic Stabilizers – The Art of Using Compressed Air
The key to stabilizing a vessel successfully is stopping the roll before it begins
You might be thinking… ‘Is air compressible?’ ‘Can it produce the power needed to stabilize my boat?’
When compressed air is released, it expands and travels with such vigor. When pneumatically operated equipment is applied with compressed air, the reaction speed is significantly faster than any hydraulic or electric system in the market today
Simply because air has negligible viscosity, it travels without any friction or hesitation
Thus, to operate your stabilizers with compressed air, it will yield a response time that is lighting fast as compared to any other system
A quick example we can all relate to – an A380 jet airliner lands traveling at 170mph and hits the runway on pressurized tires filled with air. Do the tires explode/fail? The answer is NO. It bears the weight of over 600 tons by using compressed air
Pneumatic Stabilizers – The Gyro-Gale Method
Established in 1976, Gyro-Gale has successfully stabilized vessels ranging from 36’ up to 160’ by harnessing the power of air
Gyro-Gale offers its customers the highest in safety, simplicity, maintenance and performance
Over a 44-year stretch, we have continued innovating and bringing new pieces to better our product in every aspect of design and performance
Pneumatic Stabilizers – Safety
- Breakaway design – if a fin breaks off from impact with a stationary object, the vessel will not sink
- Ruptured tubing – will ONLY result in an air leak
Pneumatic Stabilizers – Ease of instillation
- DIY product
- No hull reinforcement necessary
- Equipment is interconnected with various size polyurethane tubing
Pneumatic Stabilizers – Maintenance
- Simple and easy 2yr/400hr-interval air filter change
- Fin seal replacement every 6-10 years
- Fin Bearings are made from non-metallic products
Pneumatic Stabilizers – Performance
- 2-fin, 4-fin or 6-fin application
- Stops the roll, yaw and dampens pitch motion
- No vessel speed loss
- Underway
- At anchor
Pneumatic Stabilizers – Performance and Comfort You Can Expect
The speed and reaction time of compressed air is unmatched. In the game of stabilization, the faster your fins respond to the unwanted motions, the better all those onboard will feel
Our Tab-Fins were patented in 2013. The use of articulating fins drives the water in two directions and has proven to be very advantages over traditional fins
The Tab-Fins come in 3.5sqft, 5.5sqft and 7.3sqft
Pneumatic Stabilizers – Advantages of Tab-Fins
- Simple mechanical design
- The most efficient stabilizer fin in the industry for at-anchor and all speed ranges
- Less deflection required to create lift for stability
- Less stress on equipment
- Proven better vessel tracking, particularly in following seas
Maintenance of the G-G Air-Operated Stabilizers
Gyro-Gale has been utilizing the most advanced pneumatic technology to operate the stabilizers. Using advanced air filters is essential to keeping your stabilizers operating at tip-top performance
The filter package for the stabilizers consists of:
- Compressor air filter – As the air is sucked in, it passes through a heavy duty 4” breather filter prior to being compressed
- Air dryer – The cooled compressed air undergoes 3 different processes; secondary cooling, filtration and drying
- Micro filter – The air is cleaned down to 0.02 microns which means…it’s very clean air
- Control unit mufflers – These mufflers act as noise suppressors for the return air coming back from being used by the stabilizers
Installation of a Gyro-Gale Stabilizer System
Our system was designed and engineered to be a DIY (do it yourself) product
With a bag of tools and the installation manual, we have customers across every water-way installing our equipment. We offer 24/7 assistance
The options for installing our stabilizer system:
- Yourself and call a friend or we can send a tech from Gyro-Gale
- Any skilled boat yard
- Gyro-Gale – For vessels in Europe we can send an engineer to assist with the installation and commissioning
Pneumatic Stabilizers – So what makes it so easy to install?
By sandwiching the hull between two triangular plates with a large surface area, we’ve eliminated the need for fiberglass reinforcements, layering and the long expensive haul outs required with other brands
The ‘Inner Plate’ lies on the inside of the hull and the ‘Outer Plate’ on the outside of the hull. With a thick layer of 5200 on the adhering surface of the outer plate, these two plates are through bolted together squeezing down for a strong, solid attachment with the hull
Pneumatic Stabilizers – Internal Equipment Installation
All our internal components which include the air dryer, tank, micro filter/lubricator and control unit are all mounted where space is available
Connections between all internal equipment are 1/2″, 3/8” and 1/4″ polyurethane air break tubing that are colour coded for easy installation and troubleshooting
The Ultimate Safety Factor – Breakaway Seal
The safety of your vessel and all those onboard is of utmost importance. Gyro-Gale’s unique method allows the outer tube and fin to be completely separated from the internal actuators and fin-driving mechanism upon heavy impact.
We want our customers to be confident that their boat will NOT sink in the event of impact to the fins
‘How does this work?’
The hull is sandwiched between the inner and outer plates
A machined hollow tube is welded to the outer plate which carries the load of the fin
When impact reaches breaking point, the weld is designed to break away, giving away the outer tube and fin.
The water will travel through the broken hole of the pipe and meet a dead end at the break-away seal. This seal is 100% independent of what happens on the outside
Satisfaction Guarantee
Gyro-Gale offers all new installations with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee
Our stabilizers come with a 2-year warranty or 400 hours of operation
Pneumatic Stabilizers Testimonials from some of of the industry’s best:
Dick Lazzara: “Quadra-Fin stabilization system. It has four fins, activated by a pneumatic system. Reacts in one-tenth the time of hydraulic systems.
Because it has two fins per side, it controls pitch and yaw on two axes, which is especially helpful in following seas, where the boat needs to be not just stabilized, but steered.”
Lazzara Yachts ranging from 76, 80, 94 & 106 feet. Successfully stabilizing 63 different vessels
Astondoa 95 – “First I want to thank Gyro-Gale Stabilizers for always being on time when I had any issues. They always call ahead of time and came prepared. They always give me full details on what is happening and how it needs to be handled.
I have owned my 95’ Astondoa for the past 4 years and travel to the Bahamas with my family quite frequently.
Everyone is always very pleased with the ride. I have a 6 fin stabilizer system and as soon as I turn them on, I have instant stabilization within seconds. The stabilizers work very well, they are perfect. I would recommend them to anyone.”
Custom 107 – “We are very pleased that we picked your multi-stabilizer system over your competitors. Not only is the system extremely effective, but your price was also very competitive.
As you know, the Samala is a 107 ft. vessel and we could not believe a “one-pair” system could handle the ship, as your competitor had stated. Your expertise in the area of sales and design is above reproach.
Your concern for our problems was a refreshing change from the normal scheme of things in this day and time. We have found the pneumatic system far superior to the hydraulic system; it is practically maintenance free.
As far as we are concerned the system is unmatched both in design and performance. Our sincere appreciation to you for all you have done in our behalf.”
Guy Couach 120 – “As per my experience in the yacht with the Gyro Gale Stabilizer, this mechanism will give you excellent performance when it comes to stabilization on the boat, especially when it is underway and on anchorage.
During rough sea, it can control the yacht from rolling and you will experience or witness it for up to 85% stability. Moreover, this stabilizer is user friendly and the maintenance of it is minimal.
Because of this, the owner and I are satisfied to have this Gyro Gale Stabilizer installed in his yacht. Therefore, as a satisfied user, I recommend for all yacht owners to acquire and use this for their yachts.
Vessel Field Tech – “I just wanted to write you and say what a fine product the Gyro- Gale stabilizer system is. As you know, we have nine sets out in the field and each is performing beyond our expectations.”
Hatteras 48’ LRC – “With minimal maintenance, changing a few filters every year or two, I have not had any trouble with the GG stabilizers.”
Kadey Krogen 36’ DIY Installer – “A last item is how easy the installation was. You were always available to consult with and answer those questions that all first time installers have”
Vista Sport Fish 50’ – “Speed trials were run without the stabilizers at various RPM’s up to 2300 and recorded. After the stabilizers were installed, we ran the same speed tests and found practically no change in speed at any setting and with a top speed of 27 knots at 2300 RPM”
Sunseeker 82’ – “Happy to inform that with the Gyro Gale Stabilizers. The boat’s diesel performance has improved. The boat has gained 2 knots of speed and the stability has improved to 90% underway and 80% at anchor.”
