Salt Away – Basic information on removal of salt

SALT AWAY–  BASIC INFORMATION: MOVING SALT OFF ANY SURFACE

Using pressure and velocity provides the most successful results for moving salt off surfaces with Salt-Away

  1. Flow of fluids is caused by gravity

  2. The pressure coming from the equipment accelerates the speed at which the solution flows
  3. The Salt-Away solution dissolves salt and other soluble minerals, and contains an agent that creates a ‘sheeting’ effect
  4. The pressure must be strong enough to cause the solution to completely flow off the surface at natural exit points
  5. If the pressure is not strong enough, the Salt-Away solution containing the dissolved salt, only drizzles down the surface, but does not exit. If this happens, the salt was not removed

It is important to use appropriate equipment to remove salt. Following are recommended types of equipment to use to dispense Salt-Away

For hefty equipment, large areas, unreachable surfaces, older corroded metals

Examples: vehicles, undercarriages, buildings, snow removal equipment, ships, oil drilling platform equipment, tunnel lighting in snowy regions, & more

For most common applications: vehicles, undercarriages, pleasure boats, fishing, diving gear, seaside building windows, air conditioners, car mats, road salt spray areas & more

For horizontal salt exposed surfaces (floors). (For details, see document “How to Remove Salt from Concrete Floors”)

  • Compression Pump or Electronic Garden Sprayer
  • Salt-Away Diluted Solution (1.5% Concentrate, 98.5% water. = 2 oz per 1 US gallon)
  • Wet-Dry Vacuum Cleaner (for floors). Thoroughly vacuum loose, dry salt first. Apply Salt-Away solution, then wet vac

For locations where no water source is available for water hoses. Examples: boat launch areas, sea-side tenant apartment windows and air conditioners, glass patio doors and patio furniture, industrial field work applications

  • Compression Pump or Electronic Garden Sprayer
  • Salt-Away Diluted Solution (1.5% Concentrate, 98.5% water. = 2 oz per 1 US gallon)

For small items, or small areas on big items (hinges, recessed bolts, gauge housings, shoes) and on areas not appropriate to use a water hose

  • Hand-held spray bottle (any size). Dilution ratios can range from a 5% to a 20% solution. Dilution considerations include purposes such as the amount of accumulated salt on the item, and/or if the purpose is for salt removal maintenance. Experimenting with diluting Salt-Away is encouraged

Salt Away Mixing Unit Attachment

Basic

  1. Attach handle of Mixing Unit to water hose
  2. Attach hose-end nozzle or other hose-type attachments to outlet end

While Using the Salt-Away Mixing Unit

  1. Remove reservoir of Mixing Unit and fill with Salt-Away. Keep track of the o-ring. Unit will not work if missing
  2. Replace reservoir. Always make sure the o-ring is seated in the groove on top of the reservoir before replacing
  3. Connect garden hose to the handle of the Salt-Away Mixing Unit. Mixing Unit should be in ‘off’ position
  4. Attach hose-end spray nozzle onto the outlet end of Mixing Unit OR attach the outlet end of the Mixing Unit to a pressure washer
  5. Turn on water
  6. Turn Mixing Unit to ‘Salt-Away’ position. Salt-Away is automatically diluted at the correct ratio during use
  7. Spray Salt-Away onto all the exterior surfaces of your equipment, vehicles, or other salt exposed items. Do not rinse. No need to scrub
  8. Turn valve to ‘off’ position
  • Rinsing off equipment with fresh water before or after the Salt-Away treatment is not necessary. Leaving Salt- Away on the equipment after the application will allow the solution to drizzle and drain into areas that stay wetter longer and where pooled salt is more likely to cause corrosion from the inside-out
  • Salt-Away permeates through hardened, accumulated salt, and the corrosion inhibitors in the product become effective when the equipment is not in use
  • Salt-Away does not leave spots or streaks and does not cut or strip wax or other coatings
  • Salt-Away is safe to use on any surface that is water-safe. Electronics, greased moving parts, etc
